Questions to Ask During a Dental Crown Consultation

Dental Crowns Austin, TX

Dental crowns are a great way to restore teeth that are in bad shape due to decay, damage or an injury. They provide individuals with a way to renew teeth so that they appear more aesthetically-pleasing, while also improving oral health and function. However, with each dental restoration, comes a few unknown things, which is why it is important to ask questions.

What to ask when considering dental crowns

Outlined below are a few questions that should be asked during a dental crown consultation. When looking into dental crowns as a restoration option, it can be helpful to consider asking the following questions.

What are the options?

Modern-day dentistry has allowed for the evolution of different kinds of dental crowns, all of which provide individuals with a restored and renewed tooth. Outlined below are the available options for dental crowns, as well as a brief overview of what each is.

Gold: Gold dental crowns are very traditional. They have been around for a long time due to their durability and strength. However, they do draw attention to the mouth, which can be seen as a downside.

Metal: Dental crowns that are made of traditional metals are another option that many individuals consider. While they are silver in color, their durability and affordability are the main reasons general dentists recommend them.

Ceramic/Porcelain: The most popular type of dental crown is made of porcelain and ceramic materials, both of which are strong and reliable. Additionally, the dental crown can be color-matched to the surrounding teeth, which allows for a discrete restoration.

Composite resin: Dental crowns that are made of composite resin are not the most ideal unless it is a temporary fix. Composite resin is a material used for dental bonding or sealants, however, when used to cap a tooth, there is not as much strength provided.

Same-day: Same-day dental crowns are a newer option that some general dentists are beginning to explore. Instead of having to wait a few weeks for a dental lab to make the dental crown, the same-day machine custom-makes a ceramic one in just one day.

How long will the dental crown last?

Dental crowns last upwards of 10 years, depending on the care provided. Good oral hygiene and avoiding hard and chewy foods can help make them last a long time.

How long does the procedure take?

The dental crown procedure is typically broken up into two different appointments. The first involves impressions and removal of decay and the second is the placement procedure. Both appointments do not take more than an hour and a half.

Are there any required recovery steps?

Nope! General dentists recommend avoiding hard or chewy foods for the first 24 hours, however, beyond that, there is nothing special to do.
